The Best Industrial Vacuum Cleaners on the Market

Back to the BiG BLOG

Several industries require especially powerful vacuums to keep their premises clean and safe for working, serving customers or providing services. Typical industries that rely on extra-strong suction and durability are manufacturing, construction, automotive, hospitality, and warehouse operations.

These industries usually have a vast floor area that needs to be cleaned for hygiene and safety reasons. A standard household vacuum can’t keep up with that, which is why there are special industrial vacuum cleaners to choose from.

But what criteria do you apply, and what is the difference between the available models? If you’re a bit overwhelmed with this task, keep reading to learn about the different models, find some recommendations, and feel better equipped to find the device that is just right for you.

Types of Industrial Vacuum Cleaners

Dry Commercial Vacuums

Dry commercial vacuums are suitable for daily use in offices, hotels or showrooms. They are typically compact to make them easy to move around and store. Additionally, dry commercial vacuum cleaners tend to be fairly quiet and have a high airflow.

Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaners

Wet and dry vacuum cleaners are capable of cleaning heavy debris as well as liquid spills and sludge. This feature comes in handy in environments where spills are fairly common or too big to be mopped up.

Read the instructions for these vacuum cleaners carefully so that you understand how to use the correct settings. Always be aware of limitations such as not being able to handle chemical spills.

Industrial Dust Extractors

Industrial dust extractors are made to avoid the mess before it happens. They usually connect directly to your power tool to suction up the dust while you’re working. You will commonly find them in use in environments that require daily use of power tools such as saws or sanders.

Make sure that your dust extractor is compatible with the tools you want to connect it to and follow relevant health and safety recommendations.

High-Capacity Pump-Out Vacuums

High-capacity pump-out vacuums are the go-to when it comes to ongoing drainage tasks or flooding. They are equipped with a discharge pump to enable continuous use and avoid constantly having to empty a heavy tank and disrupt work that is often not only physically taxing but also crucial for health and safety.

Industrial Vacuum Cleaner FAQs

What is the difference between a commercial and an industrial vacuum cleaner?

The difference between commercial and industrial vacuums is the purpose they are designed for. It is not a question of one being better than the other, but one of which vacuum cleaner is best suited to the purpose you need it for.

Commercial vacuums are made for cleaning offices, shops and hotels – spaces that might have a high footage but aren’t prone to intense dirt and debris.

Industrial vacuums are designed for heavy-duty requirements for areas that tend to accumulate significant amounts of dust, dirt, debris and liquids. These materials are sometimes toxic, sharp or hazardous. They are built with special motors and filters that can handle those requirements and are usually extra sturdy to reduce the risk of needing frequent replacement.

Do I need a 110V or 230V industrial vacuum cleaner?

The voltage you need will depend on the work environment. Typically, offices and factory premises will use 230V as this is the standard for UK outlets. The 110V models are, however, mandatory on construction sites in the UK to align with safety standards. A step-down transformer is used to achieve this.

Can wet and dry vacuums absorb oil and chemicals?

It depends on the equipment you’re working with – standard wet and dry vacuums are capable of handling water and other non-flammable spills just fine. For oils or volatile chemicals, you would need specialised pumps and filters that are resistant to chemicals. Never use a device for a task it isn’t suitable for as you could damage the vacuum or even create a health and safety risk.
