Trolleys and their many uses

Trolleys are wheeled devices for carrying items relatively short distances, by being pushed or pulled. You will see them in the home, in supermarkets, factories and libraries, to name just a few places. Storage bin trolleys are shoulder-height structures with castor type wheels. These are quite specialist trolleys, used in factories for carrying around collections of tools, parts or fastening devices. Viewed end-on they look triangular, with a handle for pushing or pulling the trolley along. Viewed side-on you will see that they contain many plastic storage bins on each side. The lower storage bins will each be around the size of a house-brick, arranged in three lines of six. Above these will be four lines of ten smaller storage bins. Different colours will be used to each line, for ease of recognition of what is inside.

Steel shelf trolleys

Steel shelf trolleys look like two trays mounted above one another on a framework of tubular mild steel. They have castors on the bottom, and a handle at the top. They are used in catering for transporting ingredients and cooked food around in commercial kitchens. The plates will have metal stacking rings on them so that they can be piled on top of eachother without squashing what is on each plate. These types of trolleys are also seen in hospitals for transporting surgical equipment from one place to another. The steel shelf trolleys used in catering and hospitals often have a chrome finish for ease of cleaning.

Hazardous storage trolleys

Hazardous storage trolleys are used for transporting potentially dangerous materials over relatively short distances. They will display appropriate warning labels and be constructed to comply with appropriate regulations for resistance to impact, fire, corrosive chemicals and biohazards. They have a welded construction and are manufactured from 0.9mm thick steel which is designed to maintain its integrity during exposure to fire. Hazardous storage trolleys are usually fitted with adjustable trays which are designed to contain spillage. They are also fitted with double doors which are rebated and secured through the use of a three-way locking handle which is usually made of chrome-plated steel. Movement is enabled through the use of a push / pull handle along with castors. Usually two of the castors will be fixed, and the other two will feature a swivel-braking system.

Order picker trolleys

Order picker trolleys are extremely popular in warehouses where items need to be transferred from shelving areas to packing areas. Order picker trolleys usually have a load capacity of around 250kgs and often incorporate around five removable shelves. Other types will have two trays with a mesh box mounted on the upper tray. The mesh box will enable many items to be carried around safely, and you can see everything in the box at a glance without having to delve inside. Another type has steps attached to it, to aid retrieval of items from high shelving. Order picker trolleys are highly manouverable, with ball-bearing swivel castors. These trolleys will usually have a high quality powder coated finish, similar to many popular shelving and racking systems used in warehouses.
