Effective Paper Storage And Disposal

In these environmentally-aware times there are ways that we can all cut down on the amount of paper that we use – whether as individuals or businesses. In addition to helping the environment, being thriftier with paper and document storage saves money too. Here are some simple ways to reduce paper consumption:

- Print documents more selectively – do you really need to print out that email, or will it suffice to read it online?

- Reuse envelopes – you can buy labels, made from recycled materials, that cover your address on incoming mail, allowing you to rewrite over it

- Stop mail from unwanted sources – masses of paper is wasted each year on leaflets and catalogues that end up in the bin, often without being read

- Reuse paper – if you have printed out an email you no longer need to refer to, turn the paper over and keep a small pile near the phone or computer for making notes on

As well as reducing the amount of paper used, it is essential to start disposing of paper responsibly, by recycling. Of course, in every home or business, some paperwork will need to be kept in storage for a period of time: things such as financial documents, bills, warranties and receipts.

These should be organised and stored in a paper storage system. Once a year, go through and remove documents that no longer need to be retained. It is important that anything containing personal details or sensitive data is destroyed securely, using a cross-cut shredder, before being recycled.
