Shelving Units
With the ever increasing human desire for material possessions and goods, we collect a lot of clutter. A visit to a grandparent will show you how many personal possessions eighty years of a life can generate. Books that are never read, videos no longer used and tacky nik naks received as gifts from a well meaning relatives. Sadly, there are only a few options of what to do with the clutter. We could bin it, recycle it or give it to charity. However, the decision to have a clear out is preceded by many years of collecting it, storing it and never sorting through it. Our homes are graveyards to the iconic passing fashions of yester-year. While we do still have it in our homes, it is necessary store it, and there is only one real way to organise it - shelving units.
Bookcases and Bookshelves
Bookcases, video and CD racks, television units, shoe racks, wardrobes and chest of drawers. All of our homes are filled with helpful units designed specifically to hide our possessions away from view. The appeal and versatile use of shelving units is partly responsible for the boom in do-it-yourself flat pack furniture. Many different companies now exist to sell flat pack units so that in all our homes, we can store our possessions. In fact, flat pack furniture can become a bit obsessive. To totally furnish a living room requires many different items and once one colour and style has been selected and purchased, it is very tempting to complete the set. Why would you leave a Beech coloured bookcase alone in an office, if you can have a small draw unit to compliment it.
Flat Pack Shelving Units
Flat pack furniture companies pride themselves on producing affordable and reliable products. The products are designed to be as sturdy as more traditionally carpentered items and in recent years, there has been a great increase in the ease of assembly and the strength of the wood. Old jokes about MDF shelving units are no longer valid because the rendered wood has been gradually replaced with better quality solid wood. The quality is of course affected by the person assembling the product and there is no substitute for a patient, steady hand. We've all experience a DIY assembly gone wrong, where the screws are in the wrong holes and the nails have been banged through too far.
Upgradeable shelving units
The danger of buying a set of shelving units is that once you have accommodated all of the existing material, you will undoubtedly have additional space which will obviously need filling with something. Cue more DVD and book purchases to maintain the ever growing collection. One DVD too many though, and you will need to get another shelving unit to take the next lot. It is a vicious circle which will grow exponentially and keep requiring more time, money and wood glue. The unifying factor is in this cycle is that the more items that are bought, the more space is required to store it and unless something in human nature drastically changes, we will continue to collect more items than we need for the rest of our lives.
